This book, Minty Mae Gray and the Strangely Good Day is a MUST for all home libraries... particularly given the abhorrent pressure that social media is placing on the outward appearance of young people today. I believe it is our duty as adults to emphasise the message so aptly delivered in this book; embrace our unique features and focus on our beauty within.
Fifi Box, radio & tv personality, mum to two little girls and author of this delightful book, absolutely nails the cute and oh so likeable character of Minty Mae Gray. Minty Mae struggles with teasing and name-calling at school which has her feeling down in the dumps at the end of the day. A situation that could be relatable for any (most?) young child navigating early friendships and learning how to respond in those circumstances. Fifi uses a mystical character, notably a pink unicorn (possibly every young girl's favourite thing in the world!) to kick start the messaging thread. Minty Mae attempts to fix all the "blemishes and faults" that is causing the unicorn distress. Using clever interactions with famous people hidden in the pages of a book, Fifi masterfully crafted a dialogue that helps Minty Mae realise that the unique features that the unicorn and these famous people detest, are the exact things she most admires about them. All in all, a charming story from start to finish, with Minty Mae highlighting how important it is to find the good in our appearance and spend more time shining a spotlight on the beauty inside each of us.
