The big wide world can be a scary place for little people. There are loud noises and dark spaces. Fear creeps into their minds and its hard for them to shake their frightening thoughts. Its our role, as adults, to validate their concerns, rather than dismissing or trivialising them. It might feel silly or a waste of time, but we need to sit with them in their fear. Only then should we try some of the tools that might assist them in conquering their fears.
A Little Bit Brave, by Nicola Kinnear, is a reassuring book about finding the courage hiding inside us. It does a remarkable job of depicting how even when worries are a burden and weigh heavy on our shoulders, we can dig deep and come out on top. It portrays a story of courage triumphing over fear. In my opinion, it's the perfect conversation starter for a child who is afraid to step out of their comfort zone.
Logan, the bunny, was too afraid to venture out into the big, wide world so resigned himself to staying at home instead. He would watch his brave friend, Luna, go on adventures without a care in the world. Despite his best intentions of trying to keep busy and content at home, he missed playing with his friend and yearned to experience all that Luna had seen and done. When he finally musters up some courage, and is "a little bit brave", Logan finds that not only is the woods not as scary as he thought but his tenacity results in him rescuing Luna from a hungry wolf!
This is an inspiring book which touches on real life challenges such a bravery, embarking on an adventure and the essence of friendships.
Title: A Little Bit Brave
Author & Illustrator: Nicola Kinnear
What's to LOVE about this book:
The characters in the book are relatable;
The illustrations are presented in a warm, autumnal colour palette and all the little woodland creatures are rather enchanting;
Gender stereotypes are challenged with the female bunny being the brave adventurer and the male bunny, a frightened stay-at-home bunny;
The messages and themes of the book are subtle yet apparent.
Favourite quote:
"Sometimes Logan, you just have to be a little bit brave"
Messages:
The key theme in this book is bravery... but being brave doesn't always mean feeling brave. i.e. the author describes a situation where Logan finds himself taking a brave step, all while not feeling very brave at all.
The importance of trying new things... how rarely we regret taking that first step.
"Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing at all" - Helen Keller.
Friendship is woven beautifully through the story.
MAGIC happens when we step out of our comfort zone.
We are all braver than we think!
